An Australian IT site (aptly named "Australian IT") reports that commercial CMS provider Vignette
has struggled recently due in part to competition from open source CMS solutions like Joomla. In the article, industry analyst John Brand reports there is "competition from open source web content management solutions such as Joomla, OpenCMS, Bricolage, and around 50 to 100 other niche commercial and open source packages."
The interesting part of this is that it suggest that companies big enough to afford Vignette are sometimes choosing Joomla over something that costs a minimum of $75,000 (source: http://www.intelligententerprise.com). Ok, to me, that's a no brainer. But to the CIO with a large budget and a "you get what you pay for" attitude", choosing Joomla over Vignette would be a big deal.

The Holy Grail(s) of Joomla(ness) |

This post is not 1.0 or 1.5 specific ( though I'm really warming up to 1.5 in spite of my recent post kind of dismissing it for the present).
What I can't understand is why Joomla isn't either built from the ground up with the following or someone hasn't created really full-featured, robust, free or commerical, offerings of the following:
1. A decent Shopping Cart
Virtuemart ? Give me a break. A real pain in the ass to get it looking like the rest of your site. Just plain ugly unless you use one of the shape5 templates (they must be very patient over there). I've had terrible issues with SSL. When hunting around the code in a fruitless quest to assimilate Virtuemart with the design of a site I was working on, I still found references to 'phpshop' or something, which I think was the name of it prior to being stuffed into Joomla.

3 things about Coda that still bug me. |

I’ve already addressed my issues with Coda in a previous post , but as you adapt, issues come and go. Here’s what’s currently bugging me:
1. “Untitled.html” always being there when I don’t have an existing file open is just a nuisance. If I want to create a new file, I’ll create one.
2. I want Coda to always default to the local file listing for a site when I open the site (i.e., let me choose the default behavior) . Even if I happen to be working the remote side, close the program, then re-open it, I’m almost always going to want to work from local >> remote, and a few times I’ve started working on a remote file before realizing what I was doing. Messes up my workflow, dammit!
3. Just because I had 10 files open for a site the when I last worked on that site doesn’t mean I want those 10 files open the next time. Give me an option to turn that off.

Joomla 1.5 is almost here, now what? |

With the availability of Release Candidate 4, Joomla 1.5 stable is almost here. I've been exclusively using 1.0 (1.0.13a to be exact) for all client installs despite the promises of 1.5 release candidates and the widespread use of it already on a number of production sites.
The question is - considering available extensions, what good is 1.5 (stable) to me now? Be first to comment this article | Add as favourites (0) | Print | E-mail |

By now, many of you Mac-based web developers have probably tried Coda.
In the following rant, I'm admittingly not going to address many of the nice 'features' of Coda, like the included references books, but instead will focus on some prominent (IMO), everyday workflow items that need work.
